Townland Names and Map

Terryglass Kilbarron Finnoe

Brookfield to Bellgrove, Muckloon to Meelick, sometimes in parts of Ireland things are not always as they seem and our own parish is no exception, for example a Google Maps search for Terryglass village will land you outside the RC Church about a quarter of a mile to the north so if perhaps at that moment its food for the body you seek rather than the soul its best to search for Carrownaclogh which is the townland on which the village stands today. The townland of Terryglass is to the south and encompasses very little of the village.

Not to be outdone the village of Ballinderry is approximately half a mile away from the townland of Ballinderry. The village is actually situated in the townlands of Newlawn and Stonepark.

In keeping with the above, the townland of Kilbarron overlooks Lough Derg but when the new RC Church was built in 1814 in the townland of Ballyquinlevan Lower, one and a half miles away it became known as Kilbarron village.

If you  wish to find Oldcourt you had best specify if it is the townland in Finnoe or the house and address’s close to Terryglass.

Finnoe in pre famine days was an area with a large population but as this dwindled so too did its influence such that today the parish is referred to as Kilbarron Terryglass.

In 1838 for administrative purposes Ireland was divided into Poor Law Union areas. While it seemed like a good idea at the time, today if researching where your ancestors came from they may appear to be from Borrisokane, a Poor Law Union area which ignored all previous townland names. In actual fact your ancestors would be from Kilbarron Terryglass or Finnoe.
